Abstract: Experiments were conducted in a standard combustion chamber at the USTC in Hefei to investigate the flame spread characteristics with different widths of a thermal insulating material RPU. The thickness and length of RPU samples were two centimeters and one meter, respectively, but the widths of samples were varied, from 10 cm to 25 cm. The samples were placed vertically on a gypsum board, and a linear ignition was used to ignite them. These experiments can display two fire spread processes - wind-aided wall flame spread and opposed flow wall flame spread. In addition, the heat flux, average flame height, flame spread speed, surface and internal temperatures were studied to determine the wall flame spread characteristics with middle linear ignition. The results demonstrate that the average flame height and flame spread speed within the range show a different trend, and the maximum spread speed of opposed wall fire appears between 14 cm and 18 cm. In addition, these experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the designed rig in studying the vertical RPU flame spread.
