Abstract: Phosphorus modified organic inorganic hybrid coating (PEA coating) was prepared and characterized. Its influence on thermal stability and flammability of cotton fabrics was investigated through various tests. The flammability and thermal behavior of samples were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limited oxygen index (LOI) and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiment. Thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) was used to investigate the volatile degradation products. The surface morphology of the residual char was investigated with the SEM measurement. The data showed that the PEA coating increased the residual char of materials. Simultaneously, the coating promoted the dehydration action and decreased the intensity of flammable volatile degradation products. Furthermore, the peak heat release and the total heat release for coated samples decreased significantly in comparison with those of raw samples.
