Abstract: A comprehensive set of full-scale room fire experiments has been conducted by the Steckler et al. The experimental results are valuable for the fire model validation. In this paper, the CFD fire modeling method is reviewed and used to simulate the fire-induced airflow in the Steckler's room. The particular attention of the present work is focused on investigating the effect of various important CFD field model parameters on the model prediction accuracy through comparing the results of simulations and experiments. Such important CFD model parameters include the mesh size of CFD model, fire source modeling method (combustion model / heat release model), and radiation model parameters. The effects of fire scenario features such as the fire strength, fire source locations, ventilation conditions (door/window opening size and, location) on the model prediction accuracy is also investigated. Through such systematic validation studies on the CFD model parameters, fire source sub-models and fire scenarios, good understandings are obtained on the CFD fire models, and the requirements for accurately modeling of full-scale fires as well as the capabilities and limitations of the various CFD fire modeling methods. This may greatly help the fire modelers in performing the fire modeling properly and cost-effectively.
